How to install Picture Styles (PF3) on your Canon camera

What you need

Any Canon EOS camera with Picture Styles accepts custom styles: DSLRs from the 350D onward, EOS R and M series mirrorless, and recent PowerShot models. The file you load is a .PF3 (or .PF2 on older bodies), Canon's native picture style format.

  • Your Canon EOS camera with a charged battery.
  • The downloaded .PF3 file (for example, from the FilmTone catalog).
  • A USB cable (or Wi-Fi on the models that have it).
  • EOS Utility installed (it ships with your Canon software, free download at canon.com).

Method 1: EOS Utility (the most universal)

Connect the camera to the computer over USB and power it on. Open EOS Utility and choose "Camera settings/Remote shooting". Go into "Register User Defined style": you will see the 3 available User Def. slots. Pick one, click "Open file" and choose your .PF3. Within seconds the style is registered on the camera under the name embedded in the file.

On Wi-Fi equipped models you can do the same wirelessly with EOS Utility from your phone or computer, following the same menus.

Method 2: EOS Utility over Wi-Fi (no cable)

On Wi-Fi bodies (most EOS R cameras and recent DSLRs) you can register the style without a cable: pair the camera with EOS Utility over your home network from the computer and follow exactly the same menus as method 1. The utility is the same — only the connection changes.

Method 3: Picture Style Editor

If you have Picture Style Editor (PSE, Canon's free editor), open the .PF3 directly with "Open picture style file". From there you can inspect it, tweak it, and register it to a connected camera with the register button. This is the recommended route if you also want to edit the style before uploading.

Important note: no EOS body loads a .PF3 from the SD card. The camera menu lets you adjust a style that is already registered, but not import a new one; importing always goes through EOS Utility or PSE. If you have seen the "copy the file to the card" advice elsewhere, it does not work on EOS bodies.

Selecting the style and shooting

Once registered, the style shows up in the Picture Style menu as "User Def. 1/2/3" with its name. Select it like any other style: it affects JPEGs, the on-screen preview and the RAW's pre-render. Shoot RAW+JPEG if you want to keep a neutral original: the RAW stays editable and in Digital Photo Professional you can re-apply or switch styles later.

What to load first: five films to start with

If you just loaded your first style, these five from the catalog cover the classic ground: Kodak Portra 400 UC for creamy-skin portrait; Fujifilm Velvia for bold landscape color; Fujifilm Superia 200 for the classic all-round sunny look; Fujifilm Acros R for fine-grain red-filter black and white; and Ilford HP5 for grainy reportage B/W. Troubleshooting

If the camera rejects the file, check that it is a genuine .PF3/.PF2 and that your EOS Utility version is up to date. If the style does not appear, make sure you registered it into the User Def. slot you are looking at (there are 3) and that the camera is not in a mode that hides the menu. Long names get truncated on screen: 24 characters without accents is the comfortable limit.
