Canon EOS R7 — Film Looks & Free Picture Styles

The R7 is Canon's enthusiast APS-C body: 32 MP, in-body stabilisation and the burst and tracking speed that makes long-lens work plausible on a crop sensor. It is a body people buy for reach and speed — and it keeps the part that turns it into a film camera: three User Def. slots and the full Picture Style engine.

That combination is more interesting than it sounds. Action and wildlife are usually shot in the flattest possible profile and graded later; with a film look registered, the JPEG is finished in the field, which is what you want when the point of the day is the photograph and not the edit.

How to load a film look on the EOS R7

Register the file through EOS Utility: install it (free from Canon), connect the R7 over USB and open "Camera settings/Remote shooting" → "Register User Defined style". Pick a User Def. slot and open the .PF3; it appears in the camera menu within seconds under its own name. There is no register-from-card option on this body — the manual refers to EOS Utility for the import step.

If you shoot tethered or over Wi-Fi, EOS Utility does the same without the cable. Full walkthrough: the installation guide.

FAQ

Which film look is best for wildlife on the R7?

Velvia for saturated slide-film color in good light, and HP5 or T-Max 3200 when the light drops and you would rather have honest grain than muddy color. All of them are free downloads on this page.

Does a custom style cost me burst speed?

No. The style is part of the development recipe applied to each frame; burst rate, buffer and autofocus behave the same with a film look loaded.

Do the looks apply to R7 video?

Yes — Picture Styles apply to movie recording, so the clips carry the same grade as the stills.
